Miss Piggy Interview

DEMOCRAT and CHRONICLE, July 15, 1999

IN THIS MISS PIGGY INTERVIEW, SHE DISCUSSES THE MOVIE, Muppets From Space, AND GONZO (WHO IS A CREEP).

Miss Piggy Interview DEMOCRAT and CHRONICLE, July 15, 1999

DC:  Muppets From Space is your first movie since Muppet Treasure Island, three years ago. Is this a comeback of sorts?

MISS PIGGY:  It's just a continuation.

I'm relaxing right now in, in what the locals call Ha-WAI-i. Moi doesn't like to work all the time. Only occasionally. It's not so much a comeback, as a group of friends getting together and having fun. Except Gonzo, who's a weirdo and I don't like.

DC: Yes, but isn't Gonzo the star of Muppets From Space?

MISS PIGGY: Of course, that's what people think, because of the storyline. But people truly in the know understand that the storyline is about moi. I become an investigative reporter -- that's the true crux of the story.

DC:  Did you use a stunt double for your big fight scene with Andie MacDowell?

MISS PIGGY:  No, no, no. We had to make it real. True actresses do everything themselves, except, uh, for the nude scenes. I use a pig double for that.

SHE DISCUSSES HER RELATIONSHIP WITH KERMIT.

DC:  Your movie opens the same week as Eyes Wide Shut, in which Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman have notorious scenes of passion. Did you and Kermie think about putting similar scenes in Muppets From Space, just to compete?

MISS PIGGY: No, no, no, no. Tom and Nicole are wonderful stars, and moi would never try to compete. Anyway, what Kermie and moi have is private. We believe in true love being private.

DC:  But is it safe to say the flame still burns?

MISS PIGGY:  It's an inferno. We're talking inferno!

MISS PIGGY SEES HERSELF AS A ROLE MODEL.

DC:  Do you feel you've paved the way for other pigs in entertainment? I'm thinking, for example, of Babe, the star of two recent movies.

MISS PIGGY: Moi doesn't feel I've paved the way for pigs. But, on a larger scale, I believe moi has paved the way for strong women.

It's important to have strong women as models for young girls. Moi is a strong, yet fragile creature, a vulnerable but aggressive person. That's what women, not unlike men, are.

MISS PIGGY DISCUSSES HER FULL FIGURE.

DC: You sport an attractive new wardrobe in Muppets From Space.

MISS PIGGY:  They're little numbers my design staff has worked up for moi. None of it is off the rack. It's all by moi's design lackeys. They have to figure how to make it for moi's figure.

There is lots of measuring, yes, and acceptance of what a pig is. Moi is not a skinny, skinny girl. Moi is what moi am -- full-figured.

And moi's frog thinks that is gangbusters! Something about it being nice to have something to hold on to.

MISS PIGGY TELLS HOW SHE GOT INTO SHOW BUSINESS.

DC:  How did you first know you wanted to be an actress?

MISS PIGGY:  Well, I think when I saw the Carole Lombard movies of the 1940s. Of course, I wasn't around then. But I saw them on television. I saw Carole Lombard, who was extraordinarily strong and extraordinarily beautiful and full of vivacity. And then, even though I was but a young piglet on the farm in Iowa, moi knew what moi wanted to do.

Of course, moi had to go a different route. I had to go through charm school, then through modeling, then beauty contests. It was a tough road, but moi made it.

DC: Did any non-human stars influence you, like maybe Porky Pig?

MISS PIGGY:  I beg your pardon. Why are you bringing that up? I'm talking Carole Lombard and you're talking Porky Pig. Carole Lombard on one hand, Porky Pig on the other. Weigh them both, Jack. You decide who's more influential.

AND BACK TO KERMIT.

DC:  What else is on your mind?

MISS PIGGY: Kermit. Constantly.

DC:  Is he in Hawaii with you now?

MISS PIGGY: Don't ask. Just know that Kermie and I are very, very close.

THE VOICE OF YODA, ONE AND THE SAME?

DC:  I have one other question. Some people say that Yoda in the recent Star Wars movie sounds a little like Miss Piggy. Is there any possible connection?

MISS PIGGY: You think, I'm not disparaging you, mind you, but you think there is some association in the voice between a superstar female pig, adored by millions, and a 700-year-old man?

DC:  Maybe Gonzo isn't the only Muppet from space?

MISS PIGGY:  I think you need to lay down for a while and think this over.
